Remote access is the ability of users to access a device or a network from another location. Whilst there are genuine use cases for remote access on desktops, we are increasingly seeing these types of tools exploited by fraudsters.

How can remote access be used for fraud?

We're increasingly seeing remote access tools used for intelligence/information collection. Remote access tools, also known as RATs, can typically access information such as installed apps, call history, address books, browsing history and SMS data. They could also be used to send SMS messages, enable device cameras, and log GPS data.

On Android, RATs can also be used to key transactions within the mobile app.

Often fraudsters will contact customers pretending to be from the bank. If you receive a call and you're being asked to download any software, hang up and call the bank on a number you know and trust such as the one on the back of your debit or credit card.

We would not recommend using remote access software when conducting any banking with us as this would mean a third party is able to view your account and potentially make payments.

Why am I unable to access my mobile banking app when sharing my screen?

Why am I unable to access my mobile banking app when sharing my screen?

Due to the increasing threat posed by fraudsters utilising remote access tools to facilitate fraud and scams, we'll not allow our customers to share their screens when accessing our mobile banking app.

As soon as you discontinue with the sharing/remote access session you'll  be able to access the mobile banking app again.
