Making a payment

Faster Payments will usually be received by the payee almost immediately after leaving your account, but can sometimes take up to 2 hours.

Payments and transfers that you make after 6:30pm Monday to Friday, at weekends and on bank holidays leave your account immediately but will be deducted from the next working day’s payment limit and shown on your statement as the next working day. This includes payments made on any of these days on Anytime Banking but scheduled to leave your account the following day. Outside of these exception times, the date displayed will be the date you made the payment.

You can't recall or cancel a Faster Payment once you have sent it, and you would need to contact the payee and ask them to send the money back to you.

Regular payments

• Standing orders:
  We require at least 3 working days notice to amend or cancel your standing order.

• Direct Debits:
  You can cancel a Direct Debit online up to 8.20pm (UK time) on the day the payment is due to be taken from your account. Before you cancel a Direct Debit you should usually let the payee know that you're about to do this.
  If you cancel your Direct Debit at or after 8.20pm (UK time) on the day the payment is due, future payments will have been cancelled. However the payment due on that day will already have been taken and we will not be able to retrieve it.

• Subscriptions (Mobile app only):
  If you need to cancel a subscription tap 'Cancel subscription' on the payment displayed within 'Subscriptions' you want to cancel, and we'll link you to the company's website or app where possible.
  If you can't see the 'Cancel subscription' button please go to the company's website or app to cancel the subscription. The bank can't do this for you. If you have a joint account, you can only cancel a subscription that you took out yourself. 

If you want to set up or amend a payee in Anytime Banking you will need a card-reader or your mobile app if you have registered biometric approval. However, you shouldn't need one to arrange a payment to someone you have already paid online. 

Make a payment using your mobile app

If you have signed up to biometric approval then you can make payments up to your personal payment limit by using the account number and sort code of the person or company you want to pay. If you have not signed up to biometric approval you can make up to 5 payments each working day subject to the £750 limit, or 20 payments over 4 working days.

However, with 'Pay someone new' you can send a maximum of £20,000 or £50,000 to Premier and Business customers in a single payment if you are registered for face biometrics. The recipient will appear in your saved payees after the first time you pay them and authorise using your face biometrics.

Each option helps you move money, but in a different way:

• Send money
  Pay someone new or a saved payee.
  Up to £20,000 per transaction.

• Transfer money
  Move money between your accounts.
  Up to £100,000 per transaction.

• Add money (Mobile app only)
  Top up your Ulster Bank account from another bank without needing to enter account details.
  Up to £20,000 per transaction. Paying bank criteria and limits may apply.

In short: Send it to someone else, transfer it between your accounts, or add it from another bank.

If you need to make a large value payment above the maximum payment limit, you can set up separate payments over a number of days.

Alternatively you can make a CHAPS payment through a branch. Remember to take your debit card and proof of identification with you.

£25 - To send to another bank
£6 - To send to another Ulster Bank account

For a same day payment, you have until 2.59pm to arrange the payment in branch, or 3:15pm when faxed to the payment centre.

Faster Payments

The Faster Payments Service is a leading payment mechanism that improves the speed of low-value electronic payments within the UK and allows for greater flexibility when compared to other payment methods such as BACS and CHAPS.

It allows you to make payments in near real time and provides a low cost alternative to same day sterling CHAPS payments for transactions up to £20,000.

If you are making a Faster Payment be careful as you can't recall or cancel once sent, so we'd suggest double checking any payment details so your payment gets to the right place

CHAPS payments

CHAPS stands for Clearing House Automated Payment System. This is a system that enables money to be transferred from one bank account to another on the same day. This is the method of payment that is used when the amount is over £20,000 per working day for Personal customers or £50,000 per working day for Premier customers.
