What is a pending transaction?

A pending transaction represents money you have already spent but has not yet been taken out of your account.

An example is a debit card transaction which may take some time before it is debited to your account and will be recorded as 'pending' so it's not possible to spend the same money twice and may stop you going overdrawn.
