Stay alert to tax year scams

Fraudsters often take advantage of key dates in the tax year to try and trick people. Common times include:

  • 31 January – Self-assessment tax return deadline
  • Early April – End of the tax year

During these periods, criminals may pretend to be HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) to get your personal or financial details. They might contact you through:

  • Scam emails
  • Fake text messages
  • Bogus phone calls

What to do : If you’re unsure about a message or call, check your recent HMRC contact by visiting GOV.UK
