Bankline ISO 20022 FAQs

We're dedicated to helping you as the Bank adopts ISO 20022

The purpose of ISO 20022 is to create a common language for payments across all banks. It will also support enhanced payment data processing and improve the reconciliation process for payments within the UK and across the globe.

Find out more about ISO 20022

To help you prepare for the ISO 20022 changes coming to Bankline, please see the information below. We’ll continue to update this space as the ISO 20022 rollout progresses.

Recent & upcoming changes

As of November 2025, there are a few optional enhancements to CHAPS payments:

  • A creditor hybrid address (2 mandatory fields (Town & Country) + maximum of two lines of 70 characters
  • An End to End ID (35 characters maximum)

Structured Remittance

With changes for ISO 20022 MX messaging, new enhanced data fields are being introduced. Structured Remittance information isn’t mandatory until November 2027 and we’re not yet sending it, but you may receive payments that include this data. Where possible, we’ll pass this information on to you as part of the transaction information.

1st  May 2025: Bank of England regulations are now in place that require the following:

  • For certain property related CHAPS payments, you must include a purpose code with your payment.
  • For all CHAPS payments sent between two Financial Institutions* (which includes CHAPS Financial Transfers) a purpose code must be provided, and Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) must be included for all parties.

* In-line with the Bank of England’s policy statement, Financial Institutions are defined as PRA-authorised deposit-takers or broker-dealers, or Financial Market Infrastructures supervised by the Bank of England.

We’ve already updated our payment screens so you can include LEIs and purpose codes in your CHAPS payments.

If you’d like to find out more, including which property related payments need a purpose code or more detail for Financial Institutions see What’s changed with the most recent ISO 20022 updates in Bankline?

Changes when importing payment files to Bankline

3 February 2025: Importing CHAPS payments

You’re now able to import CHAPS payments with enhanced data by using XML Pain.001.001.09 or Bankline CSV format.

To help you prepare, you can find our updated guides for these formats in the ‘Importing’ section of our support guides at Bankline Help and Support.

If you’re using XML format, you can also register for Swift MyStandards, and find our Bankline online community where you can upload test files to get feedback on formatting errors. For more information and a guide on how to register please see our Swift MyStandards FAQ. Please note, this is not for Bankline Direct which has its own community.

In the Swift MyStandards Bankline online community, Financial Institution customers will also find information on the FI to FI Customer Credit Transfer pacs.008.001.08 format, for use when making payments on behalf of your own customers.
