How do I recover funds for a payment sent in error?

If you’ve made a payment in error whether it’s a Faster Payment, BACS, CHAPS, or international payment we may be able to help recover the funds.

Sometimes it can be quicker to contact the person or business you’ve paid by mistake and ask them to return the money. But if that’s not possible, we’re here to help.

If you can’t reach them, that’s when we can step in. We’ll contact the other bank and request the return of the funds, as long as it was a genuine mistake and the amount is over £25.

There are a few reasons why the payment might bounce back to your account automatically for example, if the account is closed or the payment details don’t match. We need to allow time for that to happen first:

  • For Faster Payments, this can take one working day
  • For BACS payments, it can take four working days

Once that time has passed, just call our Customer Services team and we’ll take it from there.

Please note: there is no form to fill out all requests must be made by phone.

We can’t guarantee we’ll be able to recover your funds, but we’ll start working on it right away and aim to get back to you within 20 working days.
