What you’ll need

  1. Beneficiary's name
  2. Beneficiary's SWIFT BIC (unique Bank Identifier Code)
  3. If available, Beneficiary's International Bank Account Number (IBAN)
  4. If IBAN not available, please use the beneficiary's account number and sort code or bank code
  5. For payments to certain countries, it may be necessary to provide a Purpose of Payment code or the reason for the payment. Please check the Bankline FAQs for country-specific information or reach out to the Bankline Helpdesk.

Charges

When you make an International Payment, there are two charges involved: one to Ulster Bank for processing the payment, and one to the Receiving Bank for handling the payment and crediting the recipient’s account. You can choose how these charges are paid in three ways:

  • Shared charges (SHA/SHAR) - You and the payee split the fees. You pay Ulster Bank’s charge (if any), and the payee pays their bank’s charges.
  • Payee pays all charges (BEN/CRED) - You pay no charge. Ulster Bank deducts £25 from the payment before sending it to the payee’s bank. The payee’s bank may also apply an additional fee before crediting the payee. For example, if you send £1,000, Ulster Bank deducts £25, so £975 is sent. The payee’s bank may charge an additional fee for receiving the payment.
  • You pay all charges (OUR/DEBT) - You pay Ulster Bank’s charge (if any) and the payee’s bank or agent fee, which is £12.50 or £8.50 depending on the country it is sent to*. This means the payee receives the full amount you send.

Note: For some SWIFT payments, intermediary banks may deduct fees from the amount sent, but Ulster Bank's charges will not change.

*The payee's bank fee is currently £8.50 for payments to the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and European countries outside the SEPA zone, and £12.50 for other countries.
